Imhoff Farm in Kommetjie is home to a new vineyard.
The 1.5 hectare vineyard
on the farm is one of a handful in the area offering a
wine destination, according to Imhoff farm owner and
managing director of Red Cliff Property, Gerhard van der Horst.
There are plans for a further half hectare of vineyard to be added in future.
“These vineyards are the first to be planted in Kommetjie
and forms part of a greater vision to establish the Kommetjie wine route,” said Mr Van der Horst.
The farm has been productive since 1743 when the land was granted to Christina Rousseau to farm produce for the Simon’s Bay refreshment station by then commissioner extra-ordinaire at the Cape, Baron Gustav Wilhelm van Imhoff.
Mr Van der Horst said the position of the vineyards made it ideal for cultivars such as
chardonnay and pinot noir and the farm hoped to bottle a méthode cap classique in
2022.
Mr Van der Horst said the north-facing vineyards have a block of shiraz planted as a single varietal wine.
