This festive season, Longbeach Mall will welcome a new Santa to don the iconic beard and suit.
Sedric Vigis, 67, will take on the role of Santa after Fred Francklin, who had been the mall’s beloved Santa for nearly a decade, died last year.
Mr Vigis, a long-time Ocean View resident, is known for his strong ties to the community.
Alongside his wife, he actively supports Vigi’s House of Hope (VHOH), a non-profit organisation started by their sons, by preparing meals for those in need.
Longbeach Mall marketing manager Minnin du Preez said preparations for the festive season began early.
“In September, we started planning for the festive season and received messages asking if Santa was coming this year. When we put the call out on Facebook, we received heart-warming responses,” she said.
One of those responses came from Mr Vigis’ son, Dimetre, who nominated his father for the role.
Ms Du Preez explained why he was the perfect choice for Santa, highlighting his strong community ties and his family’s work with VHOH.
“Santa has always been someone from our community, and that’s important to us,” she said.
“When Dimetre sent his message, it just made sense. Mr Vigis came in for a discussion, and everything fell into place perfectly.”
His sons encouraged him to apply for the role, describing him as the perfect embodiment of the Christmas spirit.
“Santa is someone who spreads joy and cheer, and that’s exactly who my dad is,” Dimetre said.
“It was a no-brainer to ask him to apply. He’s always cared deeply about others and goes above and beyond, not just for his family but for the community,” he added.
Dimetre shared how much he’s always admired his father.
“Growing up, I looked up to him so much. I used to try on his shoes as a kid, but they were always too big. Now, as a man, I realise I’ll never truly fill those shoes. He’s one of a kind, and I’m so proud the world gets to share my Santa – my dad – this year.”
Mr Vigis’ other son, Vasco, shared similar sentiments.
“My dad absolutely loves kids. He adores his grandchildren and is always talking about them,” Vasco said.
“Just two weekends ago, he was on holiday with my mom and their friends. My mom joked that he couldn’t stop saying how much he wished his grandchildren were there with him. That’s just who he is – someone whose heart beats for children, whether they’re his own or not. Honestly, he’s the perfect Santa.”
Reflecting on his new role, Mr Vigis shared the personal motivation behind his decision to don the iconic red suit.
“It’s all about seeing the joy on children’s faces and giving them something to smile about this Christmas,” Mr Vigis said. “I’m honoured to continue this tradition and share the magic of the season with families.”
Photos with Santa will be available from 10am to 2pm daily until Tuesday, December 24. Photo prints cost R50 each, or three for R120. Only cash payments will be accepted.
