David Kramer’s musical, Danger in the Dark, is returning to the Baxter Theatre for a short season this month.
Based on Shakespeare’s Othello, this production is a reworking of the hit musical Poison, which Kramer and the late Taliep Petersen wrote in the 1990s and which was originally produced by Renaye Kramer.
With this reworked version, Kramer has decided to tell the story from the point of view of Pamela, a social worker who is writing her thesis about drug abuse on the Cape Flats.
Set in the underbelly of the Cape Flats, the story unfolds in 1995, when Pamela meets up with Juanita, a friend from her school days. Soon she realises that Juanita is trapped in an abusive relationship with a drug lord and she is desperate to help her friend escape. Pamela is drawn into dark and dangerous places and situations, yet she perseveres against all odds, for the safety and survival of her friend.
The ensemble is led by Alexis Petersen as Pamela, Rushney Ferguson as Juanita, Loukmaan Adams as Michael, Elton Landrew as Poison, Eldon van der Merwe as Chicco, Tashreeq de Villiers as Lucky, Edith Plaatjies as Mrs Joseph and Chad Baai as Shawn.
Danger in the Dark received four Fleur du Cap nominations for best performance by a lead actor in a musical (Elton Landrew), best performance by a lead actress in a musical (Rushney Ferguson), best performance by a supporting actor in a musical (Eldon van der Merwe and Tashreeq de Villiers) and Chad Baai was nominated as most promising student. The winners will be announced on Sunday March 22 at the Baxter.
The chorus comprises Luke Buys, Loreto Cabrera, Lewellyn Afrika, Luke de Kock, Anzio September, Lubabalo Pupu, Rori York Bingham, Alex Rodkin, Chamonay Anthony, Mekaila Mathys, Crystal Finck, Gabriela Dirkse and Tanzley Jooste.
Danger in the Dark previews at the Baxter Theatre on Monday March 9, opens on Tuesday March 10 and runs until Saturday March 28, at 7.30pm nightly, with Saturday matinees at 2pm.
