A 24-year-old Ocean View man accused of causing a fire that damaged a flat and destroyed a Wendy house in the early hours of Wednesday November 13 is facing two counts of arson and one count of assault.
Rowan Boois was arrested on Wednesday November 27 and appeared in the Simon’s Town Magistrate’s Court, on Thursday November 28.
It is alleged that he caused the fire by tossing a flare, intended for his girlfriend’s house, into the wrong property.
The fire damaged a flatlet over Joan Klein’s garage and destroyed a Wendy house in which painter Poen Letsape stored his equipment, stock, and power tools.
Mr Letsape also had to have his dog euthanised after it suffered severe burns in the fire (“Family pet dies after suspected arson,” Echo, November 28).
Mr Boois is facing a charge of assault under the Domestic Violence Act for allegedly abusing his girlfriend, according to Ocean View visible policing commander Captain Nick Spreeth.
The case has been postponed to Thursday December 5 for a bail application.
