A burst pipe at the intersection of Nelson Road and 16th Avenue in Fish Hoek has caused a sinkhole to form, leading to widespread flooding in several surrounding areas.
The incident, which took place at around noon, has affected several roads near Fish Hoek High School, with water spreading as far as Protea Avenue and Sunray Road, including Paul Greyling Primary School off Abington Circle.
Fish Hoek High School’s head of marketing, Celeste Venter, said while the flooding did not disrupt school operations, parents were advised to collect their children from an alternative collection point and to avoid Nelson Road due to the flooding.
Staff at Paul Greyling Primary School reported that the school’s parking area had been flooded, but the school hall remained dry.
Lynne Vincent, manager of Valyland Shopping Centre, said businesses within the centre had not been affected, though water had reached the road to the back entrance of Central Mica Hardware.
Ward Councillor Izabel Sherry said City officials, including the traffic department, were on site to manage the situation. She said the cause of the burst pipe remained unknown.
