From humble beginnings in a trailer on Fish Hoek beach to a prestigious award, the Stag Coffee Company has certainly grown from strength to strength since it opened last year.
Last month it landed the Selati Cafe of the Month Award and learnt from Tripadvisor that it had received a five- star rating on the site and had moved up to a 4.4 star rating on Google.
The cafe is a family-run business, co-owned by the Thompson and Doyle families.
When co-owner Lance Thompson returned to South Africa after 11 years in the UK, it was a small coffee trailer in Sea Point that inspired him to start his own portable coffee shop.
“I looked at the guy in his trailer every day and thought it must be incredible to meet so many different people over coffee and that’s when I decided that is what I wanted to do,” he said.
And so Antler’s Coffee was established which operated from a trailer at the beach for three years.
In 2017 he took a leap of faith and opened the Stag Coffee Company.
Originally from Fish Hoek, he was not sure how the community would react to a coffee shop but took a chance.
As the name, Antler’s Coffee, was not available anymore as he had not registered it, he decided to go with The Stag.
While in the UK, he lived on a farm with many wild deer, which he loved.
“It’s such a majestic animal,” he said.
