parkrun South Africa is set to reach a major milestone on Saturday November 16 with the millionth person either volunteering or completing a parkrun event.
Fish Hoek parkrun is one of 220 parkruns currently operating in South Africa, says its co-event director Chris Dooner.
In addition to the milestone for parkrun South Africa, Fish Hoek parkrun will celebrate it 11th anniversary on Saturday December 21.
Me Dooner said Fish Hoek parkrun, which is one of the many events contributing to the milestone, had seen more than 12 300 participants since it was established 11 years ago.
The first parkrun took place at Delta Park in Johannesburg in 2011.
“We’re delighted to have contributed to this achievement. parkrun is about more than just numbers. It’s about the community, the friendships, and the sense of togetherness we see every week. A big thank you to our volunteers who make it all possible,” he said.
Bruce Fordyce, president of parkrun South Africa, said the inaugural Delta parkrun started with just 29 participants
“To think that 13 years later we will have reached one million people is incredible. We look forward to welcoming even more people to parkrun in the coming years,” Mr Fordyce said.
parkrun events are free and are held in various locations across South Africa every Saturday morning.
The Fish Hoek parkrun takes place at the Fish Hoek sports fields, on the corner of 20th Avenue and Nelson Road, Silverglades, Fish Hoek at 8am.
Participants can walk, jog, or run the 5km route, or volunteer at events.
Mr Dooner said that since 2011, the first year of operation of parkrun South Africa, eight events had been held. This year, he said, more than 10 000 events would take place and a South African parkrun finish line had been crossed over more than 13.4 million times.
He said more than 60 000 different people had volunteered at parkrun South Africa and Gauteng is the province with the most parkruns, currently at 64 events.
