The National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) recovered two sea-kayaks allegedly stolen from Kalk Bay after the man who took them ran into some trouble at sea.
Vaughn Seconds, NSRI Strandfontein station commander, said NSRI Simon’s Town coast-watchers were alerted to a man on a sea-kayak who was towing another one between Kalk Bay and Muizenberg in the direction of Strandfontein on Saturday May 30 at 8.05am.
The NSRI launched a sea-rescue craft and dispatched a vehicle to search the coastline.
Mr Seconds said that after there was no sign of the paddler, a rescue helicopter searched the coastline between Muizenberg and Strandfontein, and it located both kayaks on the shore between Sunrise Circle Beach and Strandfontein.
They were taken to the NSRI’s Strandfontein base.
Law enforcement are investigating.
The kayaks have not been claimed by the owners.
