Lyndsay Wallace, Marina da Gama
I have just read the article “Furore after diversity training at Fish Hoek High School,“ Echo November 10.
I quote: “the parents are left fuming and the children seemingly traumatised?” Why would they be traumatised? So is the next thing counselling?
It’s ridiculous, perhaps explain to the children that we live in Africa now and to roll with the punches. If they knew what was actually happening in this country and how bleak the future is, it will give them actual cause for counselling and the parents to start saving money so they can send their children overseas.
Since pupils are seemingly allowed to have their say in schools these days and behave just as they wish, nobody nailed their feet to the floor to prevent them from leaving the workshop. We all know there is no discipline in schools anymore in this country.
Also, the teachers should be present at any training of any school. You say no teachers were allowed to attend so that it can be a neutral environment - what utter nonsense.
And of course the best of all: “ We need to have conversations to be able to move beyond the pain into healing.”
Get over it and move on. The racial card gets played back and forth and will never be forgotten as after so many years, nothing has changed. In fact, the children in school now were never born in the years of apartheid.
You are in school to learn, however low the standard - politics and religion should play no part.
If you want to learn about politics, wait until you leave school and go to university if there are any left by that time, and if you want religion, go to the church of your faith.
As far as I can see, the so-called healing will never heal as it is just an excuse to play the boring racial card.
