It’s been a year since the Princess Vlei BMX Club took over the abandoned track at Princess Vlei Eco Park.
The club has worked tirelessly to transform the facility into a thriving space for BMX riders of all levels.
Last week, in partnership with the City of Cape Town, the club hosted approximately 100 riders at the track to celebrate this milestone.
Riders from novice to advanced levels gathered to participate in a day full of racing, jump displays, and a freestyle BMX competition, all coordinated by the local BMX community.
Thanks to various fundraising efforts and community support, the club has resurfaced and significantly improved the track, making it a valuable training ground for riders looking to develop their skills.
However, the track is still a work in progress and the club is actively seeking additional funding to continue upgrading the facility to provincial and national standards, ensuring its long-term sustainability.
Despite not yet reaching the desired standards, the Princess Vlei BMX Club has remained dedicated to providing a competitive platform for its riders.
Currently, the club boasts two national champions and continues to help riders compete in provincial and national events in growing numbers.
Club secretary Ashley Sandes said they were inspired by successful community programmes across the Western Cape, such as Songo.info in Kayamandi and Velekhoya in Khayelitsha.
“The Princess Vlei BMX Committee has witnessed first-hand what a difference a bike can make in a child’s life,” said Sandes.
“Our goal is not just to offer a BMX track, but to create a safe space for children to ride, play, and eventually participate in a broader sports programme that focuses on the youth in surrounding Cape Flats communities.”
To further this vision, the club is seeking sponsorships from businesses and corporates.
Sandes said the club’s ultimate goal is to host its biggest event yet in May 2025, pending support for track upgrades.
