On Saturday January 19 at about 1pm, I was walking past the post office and the smell of urine was almost overpowering.
I think we all fully understand the lack of resources and the ever-growing homeless situation, but surely we can come up with a plan?
Can the City provide some portable toilets, which will get emptied regularly and provide the homeless with a little bit of dignity?
It really is so unpleasant to be walking through Fish Hoek Main Road and be subjected to this awful smell plus other issues which have been mentioned many times.
• Mayoral committee member for community service and health Patricia van der Ross responds: Homeless people are facing various challenges throughout the metropole, and City departments work together to address these challenges.
Although the City cannot erect portable toilets on private property, there are ablution facilities in the area such as Fish Hoek Beach.
The City’s social development and early childhood development department render assistance in terms of reintegration protocols, but most of the street people turned down the social assistance offered.
The relocation of people living on the street is done voluntarily. Street people cannot be forced to relocate into night shelters or to the safe spaces.
The City continues to build on its package of social development interventions to help people off the streets. More information is available on the City’s website.
