The brand new GR86 is a sexy coupe luring you away from SUVs
For similar money to a RAV4, the new Toyota GR86 offers a compelling – and sexy – alternative.
It’s not every day that an affordable sports car makes landfall – so it’s no wonder the new Toyota GR86 made us sit up and take notice.
After a noticeable hiatus, the loveable rear-wheel drive coupe is finally back on sales floors.
Debuting a new design language, the GR86 looks more mature with greater road presence compared to the previous model.
Now that it’s considered a bespoke GR (Gazoo Racing) product, the coupe benefits from the group’s racing pedigree.
Similar to the previous generation, the GR86 features a horizontally opposed “boxer” engine co-developed with Subaru. Its capacity has increased from 2.0 to 2.4 litres ensuring more power and quicker acceleration.
The figures confirm this; power is now rated at 174kW at 7000 rpm, with a 0-100 km/h completed in 6.4 seconds (6.8 for the auto).
The interior can be described as functional, to say the least. Everything is laid out logically with hard, durable plastics throughout – on par with other Toyota products.
There’s a new digital dashboard with an upgraded 8-inch touchscreen infotainment system featuring Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
Naturally, this GR86 is also the safest it's ever been. Seven airbags are offered as standard with a suite of safety features like adaptive cruise control and blind spot monitoring.
Toyota has also ensured their new sports coupe has an improved body rigidity of around 50%, leading to more confident handling.
Other improvements over the outgoing model include an upgraded suspension, rear diff and exhaust modifications, improved power steering, and overall weight reduction.
This all-combined makes for a lightweight, affordable and fun sports car for the masses.
