Creating Spaces for Memories
As a curator, art lover and design enthusiast, creating spaces to make lasting memories is second nature. My inspiration draws deeply from my family; my grandmother Infused Her Love Into Handmade creations, such as tablecloths and herb- infused candles; and my mother, a Home Economics teacher, was passionate about home-keeping and entertaining.
Growing up, our dining table was the heart of our home, a place for conversations and laughter, where family and friends gathered. My grandmother and mother believed that the dining table was a fundamental piece of furniture, a place to break bread and connect. To this day, I cherish the art of setting a table, whether it’s a simple, minimal arrangement or a lavish ‘let’s feast’ setting.
The Art of Table Setting in African-inspired Slow Luxury
For me, a beautifully set table is a personal love letter to my guests. I approach each Table With Thoughtfulness aiming To enhance the experience without being overly formal. The essence of slow luxury is the luxury of time, to create mindful, intentional moments shared with others. My table always features candles, often accompanied by fresh flowers or herbs, and carefully chosen pieces that add texture and intrigue, such as books, blown glass, sculptures, ceramics and textiles. Each element is a reflection of my aesthetic, Sparking Conversation And Creating joy. I Especially Enjoy incorporating African-inspired elements that celebrate craftsmanship and natural beauty.
A Taste of Home: my Childhood-Inspired Salad
Salads have become a signature dish for gatherings, paired with mocktails with a touch of ginger and elderflower for a refreshing touch. These easy, vibrant options embody the spirit of fun and simplicity, perfect for casual delight.
Bejewelled Summer Salad
Ingredients
Cos lettuce, torn into bite-sized pieces
Spring onions, thinly sliced
Baby tomatoes, halved or quartered, depending on size
Granny smith apples, thinly sliced
Toasted almonds, lightly toasted for added crunch
Crumbled feta
Pomegranate seeds and dried cranberries for sweetness and a pop of colour
Assembling
1. In a large salad bowl, layer the torn cos lettuce, spring onions, baby tomatoes and thinly sliced Granny Smith apples.
2. Sprinkle the toasted almonds and crumbled feta evenly over the top.
3. Garnish generously with pomegranate seeds and dried cranberries.
4. Drizzle with balsamic and fig reduction dressing (recipe below) just before serving.
Balsamic and Fig Reduction with Honey
This reduction is a rich, sweet and tangy Dressing That Pairs Beautifully With the fresh ingredients of the Bejewelled Summer Salad (above).
Ingredients
1 cup balsamic vinegar
4 to 5 fresh or dried figs, chopped into small chunks
2 tbsp honey, for sweetness and smooth texture
Method
1. In a small saucepan, combine the balsamic vinegar and chopped figs.
2. Bring the mixture to a simmer over medium heat, stirring occasionally to prevent burning.
3. Lower the heat and allow the mixture to reduce until it thickens slightly, about 10 to 15 minutes.
4. Stir in honey and continue simmering for another 5 minutes until the reduction reaches a syrupy consistency.
5. Remove from heat and strain the mixture through a fine mesh strainer to remove fig pieces, leaving a smooth, rich dressing.
6. Allow to cool before drizzling over salad.

Music has a special place in my heart, evoking memories of places I’ve visited and Hold Dear. Rather than traditional Christmas tunes, I prefer soulful sounds that create an atmosphere of warmth and reflection. Sade is a constant on my playlist — her music is timeless and soothing Lately, I’ve also been captivated by the sounds of JP Morton, and for moments of celebration, the vibrant music of the late Hugh Masekela. Each one of Bra Hugh's songs brings a smile to my face, holding a backstory from the countless meals we shared. His music captures the essence of joy and storytelling, adding a heartfelt layer to any gathering.
My Favourite Wine, Perfect for a Festive Toast
I hold a deep appreciation for wine and I believe South African wines are among the finest in the world. A highlight of 2024 for me has been bottling our own signature wines, a project filled with pride and passion. Our Chenin-driven White blend, 2020 vintage is especially close to my heart. It’s smooth, sophisticated and enjoyable year-round, a true reflection of the richness and quality of our superb South African winemaking.
African Etiquette and Entertaining
Is there a unique African etiquette when it comes to entertaining? If there is one thing I know, it’s that ‘food is love made visible on a plate’, meant to be shared with family, friends and loved ones. In typical African Homes, When Guests arrive , We break bread and indulge together, honouring the essence of hospitality and the joy of sharing a meal.
