Each week, we will feature an extra-ordinary Mzansi personality who is excelling in their line of work. This week, we get to know more about award-winning Durban-born actor and acting coach Rajesh Gopie.
How long have you been in the entertainment industry and what motivated?
I have been in this industry for 33 years as an amature and then professional.
What are the biggest creative risks you've taken?
The biggest risk, in the first place, was to be an actor and theatre maker. It has had its ups and downs, but it has worked out fine overall.
What inspires you to wake up everyday and continue?
I have the confidence that I have something to offer the world. That is a great wake up starter. I also like my own personal development work as an actor. It helps me stay in tune with my body and mind.
What is one misconception people often have about you?
I try not to focus on such things. It varies. Some think I am quiet, others think I'm aloof. Some who don't even know me, don't like me. I can't control any of these. It's normal to have varying views, but most important, I don't given them any deep concern.
What is your favourite part about living in Durban?
Durban is a great city to get around. Not too many cities in the world have such accessibility. It is also a green city. So much green everywhere. You can head in any direction and you find nature and something to do.
Though in recent times the actual City Centre needs to get its act together. It's bad! But I still love the idea of what Durban is and can be still.
What are some of your favourite holiday destinations?
I love the Cape Winelands. Not so much for wine, but for beauty and scenery. I love London for theatre and interest. I am not a big holiday person, but sometimes just a quick getaway to the berg or up the coast can be better than travelling abroad.
What projects are you working on currently?
I have two plays to look forward to. One is a published play from the US and the other is one that I am writing.
Any words of encouragement for people wanting to get into the entertainment industry?
Be realistic. Make sure you have more than one way of earning and income. Train and be an expert. Never stop learning.
What mantra do you live by?
Keep it simple, practical and responsible.
Favourite food addictions?
I like Mediterranean food. Also, home food (dhal, bajis, okra etc). And fire cooking (mutton and cabbage, or chicken curry ... oooh I can go crazy there).
