World of Music, Arts and Dance (WOMAD) will be back in Cape Town from Tuesday October 1 to Sunday October 6.
WOMAD was launched in 1982 by British musician Peter Gabriel and has brought global sounds and rhythms to 32 countries around the world to an audience of millions.
In Cape Town, with the support of the City of Cape Town, WOMAD SA is partnering with the Desmond & Leah Tutu Legacy Foundation to present two events at St George’s Cathedral in the Cape Town CBD: on Thursday October 3: Hubert Laws (USA) and UCT Symphony Orchestra; and on Friday October 4: The Desmond Tutu United 4 Humanity Concert with top artists including Ladysmith Black Mambazo, PJ Powers, Zolani Mahola and Arno Carstens.
Tickets for the concert on Thursday October 3 cost from R320 and tickets for Friday October 4 cost from R250 through Quicket.
CEO of the Desmond & Leah Tutu Legacy Foundation, Janet Jobson, says the foundation is excited by the partnership.
“The Desmond Tutu United 4 Humanity Concert is a fitting tribute to Archbishop Desmond Tutu on what would have been his birthday weekend. The foundation is committed to extending the Arch’s wisdom, example, courage, and joy to generations to come – and platforms like this help us to reach people with this unique combination of qualities.”
On Tuesday October 1, there will be a free screening of the film A Tree Has Fallen: Remembering Archbishop Desmond Tutu at Time Out Studio V&A Waterfront, at 7pm.
WOMAD SA is also collaborating with the Toyota Stellenbosch Woordfees, in staging a concert on Wednesday October 2 titled Sonography: Stories in Roots and Blues at the Fismer Hall, Stellenbosch University, at 4pm. In this production artists tell stories prompted by instruments and the memories they invoke: through uhadi, blik-’n-snaar, kora, percussion, and Mississippi blues. Tickets cost from R175 to R210 through Quicket or R205 to R240 at the door.
On Thursday October 3, A Taste of Brazil with Livia and Fred (Brazil) will be presented at the Athletic Club & Social, in the Cape Town CBD, at 8pm. Tickets cost R250 through Quicket.
On Saturday October 5 and Sunday October 6, there will be free concerts featuring local and international artists at the Amphitheatre V&A Waterfront from 2pm to 6pm.
Artists including Congo Cowboys, Iskwew Singers, and Cover Story will perform at Masiphumelele taxi rank on Saturday October 5, from 10am to 2pm.
Livia and Fred will present a workshop at Bridges for Music Academy in Langa on Saturday October 5, from 10am to 2pm. Entry is free. Call 083 340 8904 for more information.
