Russian pianist Olga Kern is coming back to Cape Town to open the Cape Town Philharmonic Orchestra’s (CPO) Summer Festival at the City Hall on Thursday January 11.
She will perform the First Tchaikovsky Piano Concerto.
This Friends of Orchestral Music Benefit gala concert, a Tchaikovsky Festival, will be conducted by the CPO’s principal guest conductor Bernhard Gueller.
The CPO will also perform the Waltz from Eugene Onegin and the Symphony No.4.
Ms Kern will also give a recital at the Baxter Concert Hall on Saturday January 13.
Jonathan Lo, the Hong-Kong born British conductor who is music director of Australia Ballet, will return to Cape Town to conduct the second and third concerts with rising stars, violinist Miclen LaiPang and cellist Luka Coetzee.
LaiPang will perform the Barber Violin Concerto on Thursday January 18, with the CPO playing the overture to Don Giovanni by Mozart and Scheherezade by Rimsky-Korsakov.
Luka Coetzee will perform the Sinfonia Concertante by Prokofiev on Thursday January 25, while the CPO will perform the overture to Ruslan and Ludmila by Glinka and the Symphonic Dances by Rachmaninov.
Dress rehearsals at 11am on the day of the concert will be open; John Woodland will give a pre-concert talk on January 11 and Albert Combrink on January 18 and 25, all at 6.45pm and open to ticket-holders.
