From humble beginnings in April 2022, the Vigis Home of Hope (VHOH) Ocean View Cadets have grown into a youth programme that the community is proud of.
They will celebrate their third anniversary on Monday April 28 at Ocean View High School, from 10am till 2pm.
The cadet programme was launched by VHOH, a local non-profit, to help shape strong community leaders among the youth.
At the time, VHOH Ocean View Cadets programme manager Vasco Vigis said the aim of the project was to teach children aged 7 to 18 to be respectful citizens and to avoid gangs and substance abuse.
“We would be honored to have you with us as we celebrate three amazing years of dedication, growth, and achievement,” said Mr Vigis, adding that community support has been the backbone of the programme.
“We can’t express enough how much it has meant to us. Without you, our little victories wouldn’t have turned into huge successes,” he said.
In October last year, the cadets showed off their drill skills in front of thousands of spectators at the SA Navy Festival.
At the time, Mr Vigis said the cadets spent their school holidays practising for the event, and they did not disappoint.
“They made the community extremely proud,” he said (“Cadets shine at SA Navy Festival,” Echo, October 2024).

Since the inception of the programme, the cadets have performed at many community events of which the most recent one was a parade organised by Kids Are Kids and Emergency Voluntary Services (EVS), to honour community hero Deon Terry that died of pancreatic cancer on Sunday April 13 ("Late Deon Terry was pillar of Ocean View community," Echo April 14).
Mr Vigis said the event is by invitation only and invitees should RSVP by Sunday April 20 by calling VHOH Ocean View Cadets program secretary Athena Delcarme at 083 876 6440.
“Our cadets are beyond excited to share their journey with you and show their appreciation. We truly hope you can join us for this special milestone,” Mr Vigis said.
