Influenza, or more commonly referred to as flu, is a contagious respiratory illness that can lead to severe complications, particularly for individuals who are at higher risk.

To assist vulnerable groups ahead of the flu season, the City of Cape Town's community services and health directorate has announced that 18 500 free flu vaccines will be made available across its clinics.

In a statement, the City's mayoral committee member for community service and health Francine Higham said clients are encouraged to enquire at their nearest facility to determine whether they are eligible for the free vaccine.

The flu vaccine is a safe and effective way to prevent infection, lessen the severity of symptoms, and reduce the risk of complications. Widespread vaccination also helps ease pressure on healthcare services by lowering the number of flu-related hospitalisations, she said.

Distribution to clinics is currently under way, and the vaccine will be administered free of charge.

However, due to the limited supply in the public sector, only individuals in priority groups will be eligible to receive it.

These groups include persons aged 65 and older, those with chronic health conditions such as HIV, Tuberculosis (TB), asthma, chronic bronchitis, diabetes, severe obesity (with a body mass index of 40 or more), and other long-term conditions affecting vital organs or metabolism. Individuals with cardiac issues or a history of strokes, children aged between six months and 18 years who take long-term aspirin treatment, and pregnant women are also included.

Ms Higham urged residents to take up the offer where eligible.

“Getting vaccinated is a responsible choice that not only protects you, but also helps safeguard your loved ones and the broader community. The flu season is upon us," she said, adding that the public should keep good hygiene habits such as regular handwashing, and coughing into your elbow instead of your hands, top of mind.

Influenza is a viral infection and those who become ill are advised to rest, stay hydrated, and allow up to ten days for symptoms to subside. It is recommended to remain at home where possible, or to wear a mask when going out.
