Commander Mike Oldham, right, conducted one of the Izivunguvungu MSC Youth Music Groups at Kleinberg Primary School in Ocean View, on Saturday April 26 to celebrate Freedom Day, which took place on Sunday April 27. Commander Oldham said there are approximately 200 students in the area who learn to play musical instruments, ranging from 10 year old's to seniors who continue after leaving school. The Youth projects, he said, offer music and sailing tuition, their groups having performed and competed both nationally and in Europe. Commander Oldham conducted the performance with a special antique Baton that was used by him to conduct music for the Nelson Mandela's inauguration when he was the director of music for the South African Navy Band. The inscription on this special Baton is dated 1872, coincidently the year of the 15th Amendment in the USA ensuring freedom to vote for all, ‘whatever creed or colour’.
