Ocean View library said goodbye to librarian Marlene Davids, whose support for the library team and community has left a lasting impression.

Ms Davids, whose last day was Wednesday, April 30, joined the Ocean View library in November 2022. During her time there, she introduced a range of community-driven programmes, many flourishing beyond expectation.

“Some of the most rewarding moments were seeing the children excited about reading programmes, career exhibitions, and our Monday morning storytime for babies,” she said. “At first, staff were unsure if it would work in Ocean View — but it did. Mothers came with their little ones, we sang songs and read stories, and the interaction was beautiful to witness.”

Originally from Southfield library, where she began as a contract cleaner, Ms Davids worked her way up to assistant librarian while studying, eventually earning a full post in the City. From there, she went on to work at Pinelands library, the National Library of South Africa, and Groote Schuur Primary as a school librarian.

Ocean View, however, left a special mark on her. “I really got attached to the community. People here are so friendly and welcoming,” she said. She praised her colleagues for their open-mindedness and willingness to try new things. “I’ve worked at many places, and there’s usually some resistance when introducing new ideas. But not here — they were always keen.”

In a message posted on the library’s Facebook page, staff thanked her for the role she played: “Her leadership, vision, and dedication have shaped not only our team but also made a lasting impact on the Ocean View community. She pushed us to grow and led with heart every step of the way. Thank you, Marlene — Ocean View library is better because of you. Wishing you all the best on your exciting new journey!”

Ms Davids said she plans to take a short break before continuing her studies. She has enrolled in an online art therapy course and is also completing her Master’s degree in Library and Information Science. Her long-term goal is to move into social services. “That’s where my heart is. I’ve always loved working with people and helping them,” she said.

She’s also looking forward to spending more time with her children and taking a well-deserved breather before the next chapter begins.
