Longbeach Mall will host the Beanies for Babies initiative in the Centre Court from Wednesday, 16 July, to Friday, 18 July, running daily from 10am to 2pm.
Hosted by the Knit-Wits of the 67 Blankets for Nelson Mandela Day initiative, the event invites the public to spend their 67 minutes this Mandela Month knitting or crocheting for a good cause.
The aim? To create handmade beanies for newborns at local hospitals — a small but meaningful gesture to welcome little ones into the world with love and care.
"Everyone is welcome, whether you're a seasoned crafter or have never picked up a pair of needles," said Irene Oxley, president of the SA Society of Arts and coordinator of the event.
Volunteers will be on hand to offer guidance, and wool and needles will be provided.
If making a beanie feels daunting, participants are encouraged to knit a square instead — every stitch will contribute to a larger project of compassion and community.
"The event is about more than just crafting; it’s a celebration of Ubuntu — coming together, giving back, and connecting through creativity," Ms Oxley said.
