ALAS Academy’s senior drama troupe is back on stage at the Masque theatre in Muizenberg with their new production, Treasure Island, a pirate adventure based on Robert Louis Stevenson’s classic novel.
Adapted by Bryony Lavery and directed by Amy Leigh Hart, the story follows Jim, the granddaughter of an innkeeper, whose life changes when a mysterious sailor arrives with a sea chest full of secrets. What follows is a daring journey filled with mutiny, danger and the race to uncover Flint’s treasure.
“This production is packed with everything from deceptions and skirmishes to truces and treasure hunts,” says Ms Hart, who is also the academy’s head of speech and drama. “It explores timeless themes such as greed, betrayal, courage and the allure of the unknown.”
The troupe has previously performed Forbidden Planet – Space Odyssey in 2023 and the juke-box musical Disaster! in 2024.
Performances will be held at the Masque Theatre on Friday August 2, at 7pm, and Saturday August 3, at 2pm and 7pm.
Tickets cost R105 for students, R130 for pensioners, and R145 for adults, and are available through Quicket.
Parental guidance is advised for children under 10 due to some scenes of violence.
