The South African Weather Service (SAWS) has warned of two cold fronts affecting parts of the Western Cape and beyond this week, bringing rain, strong winds and a drop in temperatures.

In a statement, SAWS said the first front made landfall on Monday, May 19, bringing cold, wet, and windy conditions to the western parts of the province. A second, stronger system is expected to bring more rain and wind today, Tuesday, May 20.

Flash floods hit Fish Hoek streets on Tuesday morning, May 20, as heavy rains swept through the Far South.

Rainfall is expected to range from 15 to 25 mm, with up to 50mm possible in mountainous areas.

Localised flooding could occur in low-lying and poorly drained areas. Strong winds of up to 65km/h are forecast inland, with gale-force winds (65–75km/h) expected along the coast between Alexander Bay and Plettenberg Bay.

Cold and wet weather has also impacted the Far South, with flash flooding reported in several areas.

According to the community news group Deep South Report, Kommetjie Road was flooded near the Peach Pip Farm Stall and further along towards Ocean View by Fish Eagle Park, where some motorists were seen driving in the oncoming lane to avoid the water.

On the Sun Valley side of Ou Kaapse Weg, flooding was reported at the intersection with the Chapman's Peak Road extension.

Chebec Crescent and Frigate Road in Sun Valley were among several streets affected by flash flooding following heavy downpours.

City Speaker Felicity Purchase said: “Our teams are out now doing assessments and remedial work across the Sub-council. This is flash flooding and we will need for rain to subside to finish the mopping up.”

The Weather Service is monitoring the situation and will issue updates if needed. Residents are encouraged to follow SAWS on X (@SAWeatherService) or Facebook for the latest information.
