Far south surfers shine in Port Alfred

WINNER: Kai Stubbs from Scarborough carried shoulder-high after winning the Premier under-16 division at Rip Curl GromSearch at Port Alfred, at the weekend .

Western Province surfer Kai Stubbs, from Scarborough, and a Grade 10 pupil at Fish Hoek High School, won the Premier under-16 division at Rip Curl GromSearch at Port Alfred, at the weekend.

The under-16 boys final was spirited, with Stubbs first out of the blocks with a good 6.5 on the scoreboard. He managed to hold onto the lead until the final siren despite a fierce counter-attack from fellow Western Province surfer, Ben Esterhuyse.

In other action, WP's Natasha van Greunen, from Muizenberg, claimed top spot at the Ripcurl Cup, presented by the Royal St Andrews Hotel, in Port Alfred.

The Surfing South Africa specialty event brings top surfers around the country to compete for the prestigious cup.

Van Greunen dominated through the heats and put on a clinical performance in the final.
