In recent years, Gua Sha has become a popular skincare tool, but this ancient practice has long been part of Chinese medicine and Eastern wellness rituals, well before it was known in the Western world.
As its benefits have become more widely recognised, facialists and skincare experts have incorporated Gua Sha into professional treatments, and many people have added it to their at-home routines.
In Traditional Chinese Medicine, Gua Sha involves using a flat tool on the skin to reduce stagnation by applying pressure and moving the tool across the skin.
Stagnation often manifests as fluid buildup in the face, leading to puffiness and less defined facial features. The term 'gua' means 'scraping', while 'sha' refers to the temporary redness that may appear on the skin during the process.
The two key factors to keep in mind are pressure and consistency. Gua Sha should not tug or pull on the skin, so it’s important to start with a facial oil or serum to ensure the tool glides smoothly.
Excessive pressure or rough movements can damage the skin, causing broken capillaries.
Use slow, deliberate movements and try to relax the muscles in your face, jaw, and neck. Aim towards lymphatic drainage points around the face, which helps with sculpting and reducing puffiness.
Always move the tool towards the ears and temples, allowing the natural contours of your face to guide your movements. Each stroke should be repeated three to five times.
Gua Sha should ideally be used three times a week to see noticeable results. If you notice irritation or redness, take a break until your skin recovers. Avoid using Gua Sha on areas with active acne or inflammation.
Everyone can benefit from Gua Sha, as it helps relieve tension in the facial muscles that are constantly working to express emotions, eat, and speak.
