Most celebrities are obsessed with their looks and are willing to do anything and everything to slow down ageing. Media personality and businesswoman Kim Kardashian always looks gorgeous and is known for introducing new beauty trends.
The mother of four has popularised polynucleotide injections, also known as “salmon sperm injections”.
“This procedure is similar to dermal fillers or hyaluronic acid injections. It emerged from the wider trend of using marine-based ingredients in skincare,” explained Dr Phillip Kuan, quadruple board-certified physician.
“Although still somewhat niche, treatments used by celebrities such as Kardashian and Jennifer Aniston have made them more mainstream.”
This procedure involves injecting a DNA extract from salmon sperm into the skin, is for anti-ageing purposes.
“The DNA present in salmon sperm is believed to have regenerative and reparative properties, which can improve skin texture and promote a more youthful appearance.
“It is also said to stimulate collagen production—a protein naturally found in the skin that decreases as we age. Boosting collagen levels can enhance skin firmness and plumpness, helping to smooth out wrinkles,” Kuan explained.
“Like hyaluronic acid injections, polynucleotide injections are thought to retain moisture in the skin. Well-hydrated skin tends to look fresher, more awakened, and brighter.”
However, since this treatment is less than 10 years old, there is limited scientific data about its long-term benefits.
“Much of the support for these injections comes from anecdotal evidence provided by aestheticians and clinics, rather than rigorous scientific studies.
“I would recommend dermal fillers for those looking to improve skin texture and appearance more deeply. Hyaluronic acid, for example, can retain up to 1,000 times its weight in water, making it an excellent alternative for people unsure about this treatment.”
