New BMW 2 Series Gran Coupe debuts with sharper look, fresh cabin tech
The BMW 2 Series Gran Coupe has been given an extensive makeover, with sharper styling, a redesigned cabin and improvements to the suspension and drivetrains.
Measuring 20mm longer and 25mm wider than the first-generation model, the fresh exterior metal brings a Z4-inspired front end design similar to that seen on its revised 1 Series sibling, while the tail end receives sharper taillights and a new bumper design.
BMW has so far only released pictures of the range-topping M235i version, which soldiers on with a 2.0-litre turbopetrol engine, producing 221kW, as well as xDrive all-wheel drive and standard Adaptive M Suspension.
As before, BMW will also offer a range of lesser-powered turbopetrol engines, driving the front wheels in most cases, with a new seven-speed dual-clutch transmission replacing the previous eight speed torque converter autobox.
The South African line-up of model variants will remain unchanged when the updated model reaches South African shores in 2025, BMW SA confirmed to IOL, with 218i, 218d and M235i variants on offer.
The cabin of the new Gran Coupe has been brought bang up to date with a new ‘curved display’ dual-screen cockpit, with an iDrive system based on BMW’s Operating System 9. New QuickSelect functionality allows occupants to access all of the main vehicle functions without having to dig through sub-menus, BMW says.
Customers can look forward to more standard equipment, including BMW Live Cockpit Plus with cloud-based navigation as well as driver assist functions like Lane Departure Warning, exit warning and Parking Assistant with Reversing Assistant.
The redesigned interior is entirely leather-free as standard, although clients can opt for Veganza/Alcantara trim as an optional extra, combined with hand-sewn contrasting dreams for the instrument panel.
The seats are newly designed too, and buyers can opt for sports seats in Econeer or M Sports seats.
