Ford takes a stand against boring panel vans with new Transit Custom Sport
As the working mules of the motoring world, panel vans are, almost by their very definition, not sporty vehicles.
But what about those businesses wanting to flaunt a bit more attitude out on the roads?
Ford is here to answer that calling with the launch of the new Transit Custom Sport in South Africa.
Entering showrooms with a price tag of R932,500, it is somewhat more expensive than the regular ‘workhorse’ version of the Transit Custom, which retails at R756,000. But for the extra outlay owners do get a significant performance and visual upgrade for their sporty van.
For starters, the Transit Custom Sport receives a higher-powered version of Ford’s 2.0-litre single-turbo diesel motor, offering 125kW and 390Nm, as opposed to the workhorse version’s 100kW and 360Nm outputs.
It also trades the latter’s six-speed manual gearbox for an eight-speed automatic transmission and drivers will get to flick through five drive modes: Normal, Eco, Slippery, Tow/Haul and Sport.
The newcomer features a sporty body kit that includes a honeycomb grille, rear spoiler and 17-inch Matte Black alloy wheels. And it’s got racing stripes too! These extend from the bonnet, along the roof and down the rear twin barn doors.
Ford says this is no “garden-variety” delivery van. Clearly not.
Cabin decor includes piano black fascia trim and blue accent stripes on the seats, while features include dual-zone climate control, USB-C charging ports and a 13-inch Sync4 touchscreen infotainment system among other items.
The 5,050 metre long short wheelbase panel van boasts a load volume of 5.8m3 and the payload is listed at 1,023kg. Access is via dual sliding side doors and rear ‘barn’ doors that open to 180 degrees.
The Ford Transit Custom Sport is sold with a four-year or 120,000km warranty, while a six-year service plan is optional.
