THE OFFICE of the Executive Mayor has announced that all weekend water restrictions in Kimberley have been postponed until further notice.
The planned 24-hour weekend water shutdown did not take this past weekend because of the Electoral Commission’s voter registration campaign, although the municipality warned that this did not mean that the water crisis was over.
This coming weekend, the ANC will host its provincial manifesto launch and 107 anniversary celebrations.
The event was originally scheduled to take place on January 19, but was postponed to this coming weekend (February 2) because of the voter registration weekend.
The spokesperson for the Office of the Executive Mayor, Persomme Oliphant, said in a statement on Friday that the municipality had postponed weekend water restrictions until further notice.
“The executive mayor, Patrick Mabilo, is very concerned with the current trajectory of water restrictions and the recent 24-hour shutdown implemented from noon on Saturday (19 January) till noon on Sunday (20 January).”
Oliphant added that the mayor had established a tactical task team, comprising his office, the mayoral committee, the municipal manager and the executive director of infrastructure as well as chief engineers responsible for water and mechanical infrastructure.
“The mayor, together with the task team, will be visiting the Riverton Treatment Plant and has assigned the team to come up with an action programme to develop short-, medium- and long-term solutions to the water challenges we are facing,” Oliphant said.
“The mayor is committed to averting any crises that may stem from the current situation. Alderman Mabilo is resolute in bringing stability within the municipality and to provide efficient service delivery.”
