A 29-year old man from Belhar died at Seaforth Beach on Sunday.
A petition is calling for lifeguards and warning signs at Seaforth Beach after a 29-year-old man from Belhar died there on Sunday.
National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) spokesman Craig Lambinon said NSRI Simon’s Town responded to a call for assistance at 11.03am along with Cape Medical Response (CMR) and SAPS.
Bystanders dragged the man’s body out of the water but he was declared dead after paramedics failed to revive him. An inquest docket has been opened, according to the provincial police.
It is alleged the man slipped on the rocks and was knocked unconscious, but that could not be confirmed by police.
CMR spokesman Darren Zimmerman said the man had no visible injuries and an autopsy would confirm the cause of his death.
Co-director of the Shark Warrior Adventure Centre, Jon Monsoon, said Seaforth Beach was one of the City’s most popular beaches but it had no lifeguards and no signs warning that the rocks were slippery and dangerous.
The petition on change.org calls for two permanent lifeguards during peak-season and on weekends and the posting of signs warning about the dangers of rock diving.
