Carol Polden, who started the BackaBuddy fund-raiser, received a thank you gift from Wayne de la Peyre.

Prizes were drawn last weekend as part of a BackaBuddy fund-raiser for Muizenberg Waveski Club member Wayne de la Peyre’s operation. Supporters came from all over Cape Town and beyond.
Hilgard Rossouw from Grabouw with his prize, the Viking Waveski valued at R14 800.

When the going gets tough, the tough get going – and that’s exactly what the Muizenberg waveski community did when one of their members needed funds for an operation.

Wayne de la Peyre had to undergo surgery for an inguinal hernia, and government hospitals were not an option as they are too congested.

Mr De la Peyre said even after months of trying to get in there was no date in sight.

The Muizenberg Waveski Club, which he joined a year ago, started a BackaBuddy campaign for him and businesses donated prizes for a raffle.

A total of R34 051.96 was raised and the draw took place on Sunrise Beach on Saturday May 29, with former world and SA waveski champ Tracy Sassen doing the honours. A portion of the waveski raffle funds will go to the Muizenberg Waveski Club’s development.
