Christmas help for shelter animals
This Christmas you can help a shelter dog or cat event if you don’t adopt one of them.
The Emma Animal Rescue Society (TEARS), in Lekkerwater Road, has compiled an advent calendar for the animals in its care.
The calendar is a Christmas donations drive that allows the public to donate a specific item to Tears through its online shop. More information can be found at tears.org.za.
Staying with animals in need, the Mdzananda Animal Clinic in Khayelitsha has launched its #MyFirstChristmas campaign.
The NPO animal clinic and shelter says it has seen an enormous increase in pets being handed over or abandoned at the clinic in the run-up to the festive season.
Some dogs and cats up for adoption have been at the clinic’s shelter for weeks or even months. They include Kim, a black, medium-sized cross breed, and Brooklyn, a puppy that was surrendered when it became ill.
The campaign introduces homeless pets up for adoption to the public and encourages readers to show them some extra love on Christmas Day by sponsoring them.
“Most shelter pets have never experienced a proper Christmas,” said clinic spokeswoman Marcelle du Plessis. "Christmas is usually a joyous day, but my heart always breaks for the pets at our shelter facility who are spending it without a family. This year, we hope to make it a bit more special for them. Members of the public can sponsor a shelter pet to have a Christmas Day experience. Our staff and volunteers will, in turn, make their day special.“
Sponsorships include R100 for a good cuddle, R200 for a good cuddle and a treat, R300 for a good cuddle, treat and play time and R500 for all the above.
