Archbishop Desmond Emeritus Tutu and late President of the MJC, Sheikh Nazeem Mohamed
The Muslim Judicial Council reflects on the life of freedom fighter, Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu who passed away this morning, Sunday December 26.
They described the Arch, as he was fondly known, as an international icon, anti-Apartheid and human rights activist and freedom fighter, who gave his life selflessly to the struggle and for the freedom of all South Africans.
Muslim Judicial Council Secretary General Sheikh Zaid Dantie said: “His memories and contributions will be well lived in the minds and hearts of millions of South Africans and millions more throughout the world.”
Mr Dantie said he was a man humbled by conviction and belief who advocated for a democratic and just society that transcends the racial divide.
“Archbishop Desmond Tutu was a friend of the Muslim Judicial Council (SA), who has shared many platforms with the late President of the MJC, Sheikh Nazeem Mohamed, during the Apartheid struggle,” he said.
Mr Dantie said the Muslim community of South Africa will remember him as one of the strongest voices and critics of Apartheid Israel.
“Mr Tutu was a critical and moral voice during the struggle and post-Apartheid democracy. He was a voice for the oppressed of this world and today we pay homage to this servant of humanity, a mighty warrior and an inspiration to those who fight the cause of humanity,” he said.
“May his legacy and life live on in the hearts of all South Africans. Sincere condolences are sent to his beloved wife, Nomalizo Leah Tutu, his family and the Desmond and Leah Tutu Legacy Foundation.”
