Gary Deacon took this photo of Comet Leonard on Christmas Day. The comet has been visible from Fish Hoek with binoculars and photographically since mid December. According to Mr Deacon, the nucleus of the comet is about 1km across with an orbital period of approximately 80 000 years (inbound for 40 000 years). The comet was 89.32 million km from the earth and travelling at a speed of 52.546km per second at the time of the photograph.
