Just Nuisance was the first dog to be officially enlisted in the Royal Navy.
The annual Just Nuisance Day has long been an institution on the Simon’s Town social calendar, and this year, it will take place on Saturday April 2, from 7am to 3pm.
Registration opens at 7am, at the Colepoint parking lot, and, at 8.30am, participants will walk from there to the museum, led by the SA Navy band.
The event will take place at the museum this year instead of Jubilee Square, and the cost is R30 or a tin of cat or dog food that will be donated to The Emma Animal Rescue Society (TEARS) and the Cape of Good Hope SPCA.
The first 200 entries will receive a goodie bag, and there will be sponsored water points along the route.
The cutting of the birthday cake will be at 10am and the judging of the best-dressed dog and owner and Just Nuisance lookalike will be at 11am.
The Simon’s Town Museum will be hosting a market with the Sozo Foundation, a non-profit organisation that supports youth through education and training, and they will sell coffee and pastries.
There will be a variety of sponsors showing off pet products and My Father’s House, a food kitchen in Simon’s Town, will offer their curries and samosas on the day. Café 98 will sell freshly squeezed juice and baked vegan pastries.
This annual event is named after Just Nuisance, the giant Great Dane with a larger-than-life personality and the first dog ever to be officially enlisted in the Royal Navy.
Jean Doyle, one of South Africa’s leading sculptors and the sculptor of the Just Nuisance statue in Jubilee Square, will be the guest of honour at the event.
The Just Nuisance art gallery will exhibit at the event and donate a painting to one of the prize winners. For more information email simonstownba@gmail.com
