The Kleinplaas Dam trail has been labelled a “hotspot” by Table Mountain Watch (TMW) as there had been nine attacks in the area since August 2020.
Police have arrested a man, 22, after at least 12 panga-wielding men attacked a group of hikers near Kleinplaas Dam earlier this month.
A cellphone and a backpack were stolen in the incident, according to provincial police spokesman Captain FC van Wyk.
The suspect was found with a dangerous weapon and drugs, in the Kleinplaas Dam area, during a joint operation by Simon’s Town police and Sea, Air and Mountain (SEAM) SANParks rangers on Sunday April 24, according to a statement from Table Mountain National Park.
“A preliminary profile suggests that the suspect has a long pedigree of past offences including assault, kidnapping, theft, and other gang-related crimes,” the statement said.
Table Mountain Watch (TMW) chairman Andre van Schalkwyk said the area was a “hot spot” as there had been nine attacks - several resulting in physical injuries - in the area since August 2020.
Simon’s Town police station commander Captain Vishnu Pillay confirmed the arrest and said further investigations were under way.
