The City is spending about R500 000 on installing fences at the mouths of the Big and Little Lotus rivers to help keep litter out of Zeekoevlei. The installation started on Monday July 18 and is expected to be complete by Friday July 29. According to mayoral committee member for water and sanitation Zahid Badroodien, waste enters the Big Lotus River at various points as it passes through Gugulethu, Philippi Horticultural Area, Hanover Park, Ottery, Lotus River, Pelican Park and Grassy Park. The Little Lotus River starts at Ottery. The Friends of Zeekoevlei would help the City clean the litter fences once they had filled up with waste, he said.
