Johannes Schreuder, 67, made a brief appearance in the Simon’s Town Magistrate Court on Thursday September 8.
Criminal charges have been brought against a Fish Hoek man by the Cape of Good Hope SPCA following an investigation of alleged animal neglect.
The SPCA confiscated several animals from the house of Johannes Schreuder, 67, in February after obtaining a court order from Simon’s Town Magistrate’s Court.
At the time, SPCA chief inspector Jaco Pieterse said the animals at the “heavily cluttered property” were kept in “filthy, parasitic conditions” with no fresh water (“SPCA confiscates animals from hoarding house,” Echo February 22).
Mr Pieterse said the SPCA had concluded its investigation and charges had been laid against Mr Schreuder at the Fish Hoek police station in terms of Section 2 of the Animals Protection Act 71 of 1962.
Mr Schreuder was arrested at his Nelson Road house on Wednesday September 7, and he made a brief appearance in the Simon’s Town Magistrate’s Court the following day.
The court heard that it was a “schedule one offence” and the State said it was not opposed to bail. He was released on R500 bail and the case was postponed to October for further investigation.
Mr Schreuder is facing existing charges of animal cruelty from 2020 which are being heard in the Wynberg Magistrate’s Court. His next appearance, in Wynberg, is on Wednesday September 14.
Mr Pieterse said Mr Schreuder’s animals had been confiscated in December 2019. He had been living in Bergvliet at the time.
“We have been informed that he has been arrested and our legal representative has issued him with a warning not to take any animal into his care pending the outcome of the two cases,” he said.
“Should he fail to comply, the Cape of Good Hope SPCA would approach the Cape Town High Court with an urgent application for an interdict to prevent him from doing so”.
