Tamaryn Williams, from Ocean View, plans to use her title as Mrs Western Cape 2023 to give back to her community.
A mother of three from Ocean View, who was recently crowned Mrs Western Cape 2023, plans to use her title to help uplift her community.
Tamaryn Williams was crowned on Saturday October 1 at the M&M Music Academy in Blouberg. Mrs Western Cape is held annually and is open to women aged 24 to 58, who are married, divorced, widowed or a mother.
“Winning this title has created a platform for me to empower and encourage. To bring a positive change because it's never too late to be the change,” says Ms Williams.
Modelling has always been a passion of hers, she says. She began competing in pageants at an early age, but she says pageants are about more than just winning crowns and sashes.
“I wouldn't have been able to do this without the support of my community. It's because of them that I believe in myself, and that’s the reason I want to give back. The Ocean View community is so much more than just negative labels; it is a community full of potential and talent.”
Tamaryn says she is passionate about community work and plans to dedicate her time to helping others.
“I love the feeling that comes with helping and assisting others in my community. I am passionate about it and have been consistently involved in community projects for the last three years.”
She runs anti-bullying campaigns at schools in her community and distributes clothes to babies in need. She is also a full-time volunteer at Children with a Need, a non-profit organisation, and helps with the soup kitchen it runs daily.
Among her top priorities is helping the unemployed people in her community.
“Unemployment is very high in Ocean View; it affects so many lives,” she says. “Many men and women are struggling to buy essentials every day. I am determined to do whatever it takes to help get them off the street.”
Tamaryn will be working with My Father’s House, a non-profit that feeds up to 2 000 people a day and helps the homeless.
Another passion of hers, she says, is female empowerment and helping young girls build self-esteem and confidence.
She recently started the GotUGirl Project and hopes to distribute 600 feminine hygiene packs to girls at the schools in the community.
“My goal with this project is to reinforce sisterhood; it’s about females empowering other females,” she says.
Tamaryn now has her sights set on entering the Mrs South Africa.
“I want to show the world that you can achieve your dreams and goals even if you come from a small community like Ocean View. The key to making the most of every opportunity that comes your way is to take advantage of it. Regardless of your circumstances, you should always follow your dreams.”
