Making music

The Izivunguvungu MSC Youth Foundation, originally a South African Navy outreach project, continues to offer music projects at Kleinberg Primary School in Ocean View. According to Commander Mike Oldham, children are given the chance to check out the variety of musical instruments for a few weeks before joining one of several groups. Training takes place after school, and eventually participants perform at public concerts. Since 1996, groups have performed throughout the Western Cape, at the Knysna Festival and on two tours to Germany. Earlier this month, a small group performed at the funeral service for a teacher, Donovan Koesyn, who had assisted on the Izivunguvungu band tours to the Knysna Festival.
