Supporters and fans queued at Athlone Stadium’s gates from as early as 6am to gain entry and get the best seats ahead of the Kaapse Klopse Karnival Association's annual competition.

The competition kicked off on Saturday January 6 where minstrel troupes competed in various categories. The competition will run across five weekends where troupes are divided into two sections, competing in Best Dress, Best "Voorloeper", “Klopse Jol”, Best Band and singing categories.

Excitement at the stadium was high as the venue filled with the sounds of well-known sing-alongs and the troupes’ anthems for the 2023/2024 season.

The item most spectators look forward to is the “Klopse Jol” – this is one of the most loved items by both troupes and spectators. Troupes show off their sound and drum majors are judged during this item.
