The Keiskamma Covid Resilience Tapestry will be exhibited at the Noordhoek Art Point Gallery on Thursday February 29.
A tapestry, which is valued at nearly R1million and tells of the struggle against the Covid pandemic, will be on display to the public this Thursday at a Noordhoek gallery.
The 2.5m x 7.5m Keiskamma Covid Resilience Tapestry was made by the Keiskamma Art Project based in Hamburg, in the Eastern Cape. The group is known for its large-scale embroidery projects.
“It is an honour to show a piece like this and show the true spirit that art is able to bring to communities,” said Aimee Kruger, co-owner of the Noordhoek Art Point Gallery.
According to Pippa Heatherington, an independent curator associated with the Keiskamma Art Project, it took the artists two years to complete the tapestry.
“This artwork symbolises their response and resilience during the pandemic, and captures the emotional ebbs and flows experienced throughout the pandemic year of 2020 and 2021,” said Ms Heatherington.
The tapestry is to appear alongside work by students from MasiSports and Arts. MasiSports is a non-profit company that runs a sports and life-skills programme at Ukhanyo Primary and Masiphumelele High schools.
"The Covid Resilience Tapestry was originally exhibited in Cape Town at the Association for Visual Arts gallery during the Cape Town Art Fair. Since it was already in our vicinity, we decided to display it at Noordhoek Art Point Gallery alongside the MasiSports and Arts initiative,“ said Ms Heatherington.
The tapestry will be on exhibition for one day only. The gallery closes at 5pm.
