The 1st Muizenberg sea scout group has reason to celebrate after taking second place in the annual Tonkin Trophy competition.
Introduced in 1958, the Tonkin Trophy signifies the pinnacle of success for a scout group in the Western Cape, judging its performance through rigorous testing and adherence to scouting principles.
The 1st Muizenberg sea scout group was founded in 1909, and this is the first time in its history that it has achieved such a high ranking in the competition with a score of 98%, according to 1st Muizenberg troop scouter David Bosch.
“This remarkable achievement not only reflects the dedication and hard work of the members of 1st Muizenberg but also underscores the commitment of the group to excellence and the values of scouting,” Mr Bosch said.
This year the trophy was won by 1st Durbanville.
The Tonkin Trophy was awarded at the Sea Scout Base in Zandvlei on Sunday February 18, when scout groups from around the province met for BP Sunday, ahead of February 22, the day when scouts celebrate the birthday of scouting’s founder, Lord Robert Baden-Powell.
