An Ocean View skipper, 39, was found 50m off-shore at Brightwaters on the Atlantic side of Cape Point on Saturday after his boat capsized in dense fog.
A 39-year-old skipper from Ocean View drowned at Brightwaters, on the Atlantic side of Cape Point on Saturday, April 20, after his boat capsized.
Two men, aged 29 and 17, from Hout Bay, who were also on the boat, managed to get to safety at the Cape Point main gate and reported the incident.
National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) spokesperson Craig Lambinon said that NSRI Kommetjie, NSRI Simonstown, and NSRI Hout Bay duty crews were activated after Cape Medical Response (CMR) had received the call from SA National Parks rangers (TMNP – Table Mountain National Parks).
The two survivors were treated by CMR paramedics and they were transported to the hospital, both suffering injuries but both in stable conditions.
“On arrival at the scene, the casualty boat was found beached and an extensive sea and shoreline search commenced for the missing 39-year-old fisherman. It appears that the casualty boat may have been swamped by a wave before running aground on the shoreline,” Mr. Lambinon said.
The body of the man was located approximately between 30 and 50 meters offshore at Brightwaters and was recovered onto the NSRI rescue craft. The man was declared dead.
Simon’s Town police spokesman, Warrant Officer Jerome Engelbrecht, confirmed that a drowning occurred on Saturday, and an inquest docket was opened.
"The circumstances surrounding the drowning are unknown at this stage. Simon’s Town SAPS was in consultation with Hout Bay SAPS and the docket will be transferred to Simon’s Town for further investigation.”
