Olympic gold medallist swimmer Chad le Clos will visit Fish Hoek for the first time on Friday September 6 as a distinguished guest at Fish Hoek High School’s 70th anniversary gala dinner.
“I’m really looking forward to visiting Fish Hoek. It’s an honour to be part of such a special occasion,” said Le Clos in an exclusive interview with the False Bay Echo.
Le Clos boasts four Olympic medals to his name, along with 16 world championship medals and 18 Commonwealth Games medals.
Known for his skill in the butterfly and individual medley events, he has set several world records and regularly excelled in international competitions, making him one of the top athletes in the world.
However, his impact goes far beyond the pool. The Chad Le Clos Foundation helps young people realise their full potential by giving them access to education, training and water safety.
“I believe in giving back,” he said. “Inspiring and uplifting the next generation is something I’m incredibly passionate about.”
Fish Hoek High School’s anniversary gala dinner will also serve as a fund-raiser for a new aquatic centre for the school.
“Fish Hoek High School pupils are very lucky because their school is doing this (building an aquatic centre). My old high school (Westville Boys' High) built a phenomenal aquatic centre, but it was after I left. They named it the Chad le Clos Pool, which I am very proud of,” said Le Clos.
“Take the opportunities that you have, and don’t make excuses for what you don’t have,” he tells those hoping to become professional swimmers.
“I don’t come from first-class facilities, and I made it to the top so my advice is to make the best of your situation and make sure that you sacrifice enough and enjoy yourself.”
Fish Hoek High School head of marketing Celeste Venter said the school was thrilled to have Le Clos join them on Friday.
The gala dinner will take place at 6.30pm in the school’s Hepworth Hall. Tickets cost R900 and are available on Quicket.
