The Aryan Benevolent Home Western Cape hosted a diabetes awareness day on Saturday September 21 at the Samaj Centre in Gatesville. Here dietician Nasleen Jaffer gives advice on healthy eating and having a balanced diet to combat diabetes. Chairperson of the Cape Town Hindu Seva Samaj (CTHSS), Jaywant Parbhoo, also shared some interesting points from a research paper published in 2023 in the International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health. These include that diabetes is the second most common cause of death in South Africa after tuberculosis and that it is the leading underlying cause of death in women in South Africa. Risk factors for diabetes include advanced age (over 60 years), overweight or obese, inactivity, smoking and poor diet. The association of diabetes and family history can be attributed to genetic factors. Higher psychological distress may be a risk factor for diabetes. Indian South Africans have three times the prevalence of diabetes than any other group in the country. The Aryan Benevolent Home Western Cape welcomes donations.
