Cub award returns to 1st Muizenberg after 88 years
The 1st Muizenberg cub pack made history at this year's 105th Edward Shield Competition by bringing home the coveted Edward Shield, which marks the first win for the group since 1936.
The competition, introduced in 1918, is an annual event for cubs from all over the Western Cape.
Held at Monte Vista scout hall, on Saturday October 26, the event featured 16 stations where cubs were tested on first aid, knotting, compass and mapping, heritage, safety, road signs and other skills.
"Each challenge, from knotting to first aid, showcased their skills and teamwork. They impressed us all with their resilience and enthusiasm. This event is a testament to the spirit of scouting and the incredible potential within each young cub. A heartfelt thank you to the judges, volunteers, and everyone who made this competition a memorable success,” said Richard Steinhofel, support team member for Scouts South Africa and organiser of the event.
Angela Lee-Wright, 1st Muizenberg Scout Group leader, said the cubs had worked “incredibly hard and truly deserved this brilliant success”.
“Bringing the shield back to Muizenberg after 88 years is a testament to the skills our new pack scouter and his team have imparted to our children. Even our parents got into the spirit and had a fantastic time.”
The cub pack leader Jason Suter said: “I am always proud of our cubs when they go out and do their best, but this was particularly exciting because we fielded a wide range of cubs and gave as many of them chances to be tested as possible. Taking the win was a great affirmation that the 1st Muizenberg cubs are engaging with the programme and taking pride in their skills development.”
