Three northern suburbs women have won awards for making a positive impact and inspiring others.
Dr Natasha Ross, of Kuils River, won the Innovation and Technology Pioneer category; Brittany Smith, also of Kuils River, won the Young Achiever category; and Janine Myburgh, of Parow, won the Lifetime Achievement category in the inaugural Warrior Woman Awards presented by Good Hope FM.
The awards were presented during a ceremony at Zevenwacht Wine Estate last Wednesday.
There were 36 finalists across 12 categories.
The station said its call for nominations at the beginning of September drew hundreds of submissions. Following a selection process, three finalists were announced per category followed by a week of public voting, and, ultimately, Good Hope FM's internal judges selected the winners.
Dr Ross is a senior lecturer and researcher at UWC and is known for her work in chemistry, which involves developing solar-charged batteries with applications in medicine, agriculture, and transportation.
“This recognition strengthens my dedication to mentorship and empowering future female researchers, especially in fields addressing key green energy and sustainability challenges,” she said.
Ms Smith is a soloist at Cape Town Opera. Her debut solo singing role was as Cherubino in Le Nozze di Figaro in 2016. She was also selected for the Mail & Guardian 200 Young Influential People two years ago for her role in the classical arts.
“I am still in disbelief, and each time I look at my award I am especially grateful towards Good Hope FM for recognising all of us,” she said.
Ms Myburg, the former president of the Cape Chamber of Commerce and Industry, currently serves on the Chief Justice of SA’s National Efficiency Enhancement Committee. She is the recipient of several awards including the International Woman of Wonder, in the UK, in August this year and the Covid-19 Legal Eagle Award in August 2020.
“I feel most blessed and very honoured by having received this award,” she said.
