WITH the aim of equipping learners and teachers with essential digital skills, a new information and communication technology (ICT) multimedia centre was opened at Boesmanland High School in Pofadder.
The project was led by Konkoonsies II Solar Energy Facility and will provide access to digital resources and skills to 450 learners.
The social performance co-ordinator for Aggeneys Solar and Konkoonsies II Solar, Jeremy Prins, said the centre is a huge benefit to the learners.
“The centre was handed over by the Department of Education last year. The facility was completed within a year and is already making an impact, with an increase in learners pursuing Computer Applications Technology this academic year. The new ICT centre is equipped with 30 computers, satellite internet, and classroom technology. The initiative also included classroom renovations and improved security,” said Prins.
“Introducing technology into the classrooms has several advantages for both learners and teachers. These include improved learning outcomes, quicker access to information, enhanced teaching productivity, and the ability to incorporate diverse learning styles. The funding also includes the appointment of two facilitators to manage the centre. This is in addition to teacher support, learner training, and technical oversight. The centre fosters a positive and effective learning environment.”
Prins stated that the centre's services will be extended to local youth.
“The facilitators guide teachers in incorporating ICT tools into lessons and address individual challenges in using technology effectively. For learners, the facilitators run digital literacy workshops, equipping them with essential skills for academic tasks and future opportunities. These workshops are also extended to local youth eager to improve their digital proficiency.
“Additionally, the facilitators are responsible for maintaining the centre’s equipment, troubleshooting technical issues, and ensuring the technology remains functional and accessible,” he said.
He added that the centre and the school management will continue their relationship to ensure services at the centre are continuously available to learners.
“To ensure sustainability, the solar facilities will fund the centre’s internet connectivity for two years. The school management team has received training to run the centre and has developed policies and an implementation plan to take full ownership of the facility,” said Prins.
The principal of Boesmanland High School said that learners have improved their writing skills and completed research assignments within deadline thanks to the internet access.
