The Hout Bay Lions Club’s new candidates for this year’s Youth Leadership Group with some Lion’s members at Nowers High School Academy in Valley Road.
The Hout Bay Lions Club have welcomed 27 Grade 10 pupils to their annual youth leadership programme.
Last year, the Lions trained Grade 12 learners at Hout Bay High School, as part of the programme, said spokesperson Elizabeth Boonzaier.
Previously, Sentinel reported on 25 teenagers who took part in a Hout Bay Lions Club leadership course and received their graduation certificates at Hout Bay library on Saturday July 20. (’Hout Bay Lions nurture future leaders’, August 20).
The 27 Grade 10 pupils taking part in the programme are from Nowers High School Academy in Valley Road.
“The response from Nowers High School and the Grade 10 learners had been positive and enthusiastic with twenty-seven learners signing up for the programme. This delighted the members of the Hout Bay Lions Club as this was the highest number of participants in the history of the Youth Leadership Programme. They are the future leaders at the school and can play an important role inspiring the whole school learner population and at the same time develop their own skills,” Ms Boonzaier said.
Nasiphi Khwatshube says she joined the programme to develop her self-confidence.
“This programme has given me an the opportunity to connect and learn from my peers while applying leadership skills to real world projects,” she said.
This year’s youth leadership programme covers a wide array of topics, such as; emotional intelligence, motivation, vision boards, conflict resolution, financial planning, communication and team-building.
“I hope to benefit from mentorship, networking opportunities and the skill-building workshops at the leadership camp,” said Grade 10 pupil, Likho James.
When asked why she signed up for the programme, Anam Sibara, a Grade 10 pupil, said: “I registered for the Youth Leadership Programme to gain valuable knowledge that will expand my personal growth. Through this programme, I hope to develop leadership skills, boost my confidence, and achieve my personal and career goals.”
Amongst this year’s members, Tanya Holly, says her mother, Maxy, believes the leadership camp can instil discipline and morals.
“Youth groups often emphasise values like kindness, respect, and responsibility, which can shape my daughter’s character and moral compass,” she said.
